We're Back!

Some of us took some time away from the heat this summer and we are grateful to those who kept the spirit of our organization alive! As the temps cool...when they cool.. it will help to keep those blossoms looking fresh! We look forward to seeing you on Wednesdays at five!
PS: Ted and I actually did our arranging at home to beat the heat!

Congratulations!!

Congratulations to Kevin and Shawna, co-owners of Your Event Florist! They have been designated and honored as our Volunteers of the Year for their generous commitment to our program. Each week we have descended on their flower studio to create our flower arrangments and they have welcomed us with bright smiles each Wednesday. Kevin has patiently taught us how to make the arrangments look beautiful, sharing his tools and tricks of the trade. Shawna has helped us deliver and kept us on track with her cheery attitude. Thank you! And congratulations!

Mother's Day Special

For a girl who wore a plaid skirt to school for twelve years in a row, it brought a smile to my face to get a call from Father Bill. ( I wasn't in trouble! ) He runs Andre House, the homeless shelter in downtown Phoenix. "It is rare that our guests are treated to such beautiful flowers, " he said in expressing his gratitude for the deliveries we made on Mother's Day. More than 30 centerpieces adorned the tables at the shelter and we passed out single roses and orchids to the mothers who lined up for dinner.
Thanks so much to Shawna and Kevin, Colleen, Alex and Teddy ( and our great Destination Manager driver ) for taking time out on a steamy Sunday to bring smiles to people's faces! Photos to come!
PS: We dedicated the day to the memory of Jane Johnston.

Thanks TK!

Many thanks to Theresa Keeley who rescued some beautiful flowers from the post -event doldrums. She picked them up and delivered the arrangements to Hospice this morning. It is our hope that more and more blossoms will make their way to the bedside and provide momentary cheer to someone in need.

Valentine's Day Tribute

Here’s a chance to share the love in a new and meaningful way on February 14 as we sponsor our first Annual Valentine’s Day Tribute.

We are urging volunteers to contribute or add to their Valentine’s Day dollars to send some love to two very special groups of people. Thanks to the generosity of supporters, patients within Hospice of the Valley Hospice homes and the women and children seeking shelter from abuse within the Sojourner Center, will receive the beautiful gift of fresh flowers and a message of caring on Valentine’s Day.

Volunteers wishing to donate may call or email the Hearts In Bloom designated florist, Your Event Florist, to contribute $25, $50, $100 or more. This will insure that blooms will be delivered to terminal patients and those seeking shelter from harm on a day that signifies love and caring. To make a contribution call 480.203.2740 or email your request to Kevin@youreventflorist.com.

Our volunteers hope to deliver a minimum of 350 bouquets on Valentine’s Day and we hope you will join us!

How You Can Help:

Our volunteers start at the flower studio where they put together the bouquets for each Hospice patient. Once the flowers are done, they deliver the vases to each room of the home and decorate the common areas with any extra bouquets.

We deliver every Wednesday to the Hospice of the Valley homes in Scottsdale, AZ. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, please contact Lynn O'Rourke Hayes at 480.556.6266 or via email at lohayes@familytravel.com.

Who We Are:

The Hearts In Bloom primary mission is to provide fresh flowers to terminally ill patients with the hopes of lifting their spirits and brightening their final days. Founders Lynn O’Rourke Hayes and Colleen Horan believe that delivering a small vase of beautiful fresh flowers to the Hospice patients' bedsides will show these patients, many of whom have no family nearby, that they are loved and thought of as they leave this world. Since every floral arrangement is created out of love and compassion, Hearts in Bloom embodies the Hospice philosophy and vision that people should die with dignity. Deliveries are made by Hearts In Bloom volunteers each Wednesday to the patients within Scottsdale Hospice homes. Four times a year the Hearts In Bloom will provide the gift of fresh flowers to an additional group or organization that might benefit from this tribute.

O’Rourke Hayes and Horan first became friends while attending high school in Kettering, Ohio. Their mothers, Ann O’Rourke and Eileen Horan, both succumbed to cancer in their 50s. Both were cared for by Hospice volunteers.

Hospice of the Valley, one of the largest and oldest not-for-profit hospices in the country, founded in 1977. It serves nearly 10,000 patients a year, ranging in age from newborns to seniors over 100, providing comfort and dignity as life nears its end. More than 90 percent of Hospice of the Valley’s patients are cared for in their own homes, with the remainder served in 12 inpatient hospice homes Valley wide.

Working hand in hand with Hospice of the Valley, Hearts In Bloom has been able to bring smiles to the hearts of both patients and their families, and hopes to continue the deed with your help!
